The Loc Journey

Supporting you through every
stage of your loc journey

Starting your loc journey is a process that unfolds over time.

With consistency, care, and patience, your locs will begin to form and settle into their own unique pattern.

This page is here to offer guidance, helping you feel more confident about what to expect throughout your loc journey, from your Establishment through to caring for your locs over time. Every journey is different, but these shared experiences can help you feel more at ease along the way.

Understanding Your Loc Journey

In the early stages of your loc journey, your hair will slowly begin to shift and take shape as the strands start to intertwine.

You may notice changes like frizz, budding, texture differences, or shrinkage. While it can feel unfamiliar at first, these are all natural signs that your locs are beginning to form.

With time, regular maintenance and retightening, and a little trust in the process, your locs will continue to strengthen and gradually become more defined.

The Stages of Loc Development

Locs develop gradually and move through several natural stages as the hair begins to intertwine and strengthen.

Budding
In the early months, you may notice small puffy areas forming along the loc. This is often one of the first signs that your hair is beginning to lock.

Locking
As your hair continues to intertwine, your locs will begin to feel more structured and defined as the pattern starts to settle.

Maturation
Over time, your locs will feel firmer and more consistent in shape as they settle into their long-term pattern.

Everyone’s experience is unique. The timing of each stage can vary depending on your hair texture, density, and growth.

Your Consultation

Your consultation is an important step where the loctician takes the time to understand your hair, your lifestyle, and any preferences or concerns you may have.

During this session, the loctician will cover several important areas to ensure everything is aligned.

This includes discussing your preferred loc size, your desired outcome, and how your locs will fit into your day-to-day lifestyle.

Your hair and scalp will be assessed by the loctician to ensure your loc journey can begin in a way that supports the health of your hair and scalp.

You will also have a few sample locs placed to help determine the size and pattern that will be used for your full Establishment. This helps determine which locking pattern is most suitable for your specific hair type.

After the consultation is complete, and you feel happy to move forward, a date can be arranged for your Establishment.

After Your Establishment

In the first few weeks after your Establishment, your locs may feel different to what you expected, and that is completely normal. You might notice frizz, loosening at the ends, or changes in texture as your hair begins to adjust.

This stage is all part of the process, and it can feel like a lot in the beginning, but this is where your locs start to find their form, so try to trust the process and allow your hair the time it needs to settle.

Looking after your locs doesn’t have to feel complicated. Simple, consistent loc care and maintenance can go a long way in supporting healthy loc development.

Retightening appointments
Many clients find that a regular routine, often around 4–6 weeks, helps keep their locs feeling neat and supported at the root, especially in the earlier stages. For some, this may extend slightly to around 4–8 weeks depending on hair type and rate of growth.

Scalp care
A clean, balanced scalp creates a strong foundation for healthy locs, helping to reduce dryness and build-up.

Hydration
If your locs begin to feel dry, a light water-based mist can help keep them refreshed while maintaining softness and flexibility.

Product use
You may find that using less product helps your locs feel lighter and more balanced over time. Heavy product use can lead to build up within the locs.

Styling
Locs give you the freedom to style your hair in many different ways, allowing you to express your personal style as your locs develop. Being mindful of tension, especially around the roots, can help keep your locs comfortable and reduce the risk of breakage. Changing styles from time to time can help keep your locs feeling balanced.

Night care

Sleeping with a satin or silk bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase can help reduce friction and protect your locs overnight. If wearing a bonnet, make sure it sits comfortably around your perimeter, allowing your locs room to breathe.

After washing
Taking the time to fully dry your locs helps keep them fresh and supports their structure as they continue to settle. Locs that remain damp can sometimes develop an odour, so allowing them to dry fully is important.

Giving your locs time
Allowing your locs the space to form naturally can make a real difference over time. Your locs will not all look the same straight away, and that is part of what makes your journey your own.

Loc Care & Maintenance

Washing & Early-Stage Care

In the beginning, it is quite common to experience a little dryness or itching as your scalp adjusts. This usually settles with time.

Braid and band your locs before washing to help prevent tangling and keep them neat, especially in the early stages of your loc journey.

Taking a light approach when cleansing your scalp can help maintain the structure of your locs while keeping your hair clean. When cleansing, you can work the shampoo from the scalp down towards the ends of your locs, allowing the suds to move through naturally.

When it comes to hydration, misting your locs with a light, water-based product can help keep them feeling refreshed without interfering with the locking process.

Retightening Appointments

Your first retightening appointment usually takes place around four weeks after your Establishment.

This appointment helps maintain the structure of your locs and tighten the new growth at the root, keeping everything neat as your locs continue to settle.

To prepare, it is helpful to arrive with clean, product-free hair and avoid applying oils or creams beforehand.

Staying consistent with your retightening appointments supports the long-term health and appearance of your locs.

Be Mindful

As your locs develop, a few small habits can make a difference over time.

  • Leaving too long between retightening appointments can lead to merging at the roots

  • Heavy product use can result in build up within the locs

  • Frequent tight styling can place stress on the roots

Keeping things simple and consistent often supports the best results.

Types of Locs

What are Sisterlocks™?
Sisterlocks™ are a natural hair locking system created using small, uniform sections and a specialised interlocking technique. Sisterlocks™ are installed by certified consultants who have been formally trained in the technique.

What are Brotherlocks™?
Brotherlocks™ create larger, more structured locs using a precise interlocking technique suited to fuller loc patterns. This method creates a strong foundation that supports long-term growth and maintenance.

What are Microlocs?
Microlocs can be created using interlocking, braiding, or twisting, depending on your hair texture and the size you would like.

They are typically smaller than traditional locs and slightly larger than Sisterlocks™, offering a neat and versatile option.
